Enlarged Pores and Uneven Skin Texture: What Actually Helps?

If your skin feels rough, looks uneven or your pores seem more noticeable than they used to, it can be tempting to throw every product and treatment at it.
But enlarged pores and uneven skin texture can have several different causes, which means the best treatment depends on what is actually happening in your skin.
At Tempera Health & Skin Clinic in Overton, I look at the overall condition of the skin first rather than automatically recommending one treatment.
Why do pores look enlarged?
Pores can appear more noticeable for a few different reasons.
Oil production, congestion, reduced skin elasticity, sun damage and dehydration can all make pores look more obvious.
You also cannot permanently “close” pores because they are a normal part of the skin.
What we can often do is improve the appearance of them by improving skin texture, reducing congestion and supporting collagen production.
What causes uneven skin texture?
Uneven texture can show up as roughness, bumps, visible pores, old acne scarring or skin that simply does not feel as smooth as it used to.
Common causes include:
Congestion and blocked pores
Previous acne or breakouts
Dehydration
Sun damage
A build-up of dead skin cells
Reduced collagen production as we age
This is why one treatment does not suit everyone.
Can microneedling help?
Microneedling can be a good option when the main concern is skin texture, enlarged pores, fine lines or acne scarring.
The treatment uses very fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin, encouraging the natural repair process and supporting collagen and elastin production.
Over a course of treatments, this can help the skin look smoother and more refined.
Microneedling is not about making the skin aggressively red or sore. Treatment depth can be adapted depending on your skin, your concerns and your tolerance for downtime.
What about chemical peels?
Chemical peels can be particularly useful when uneven texture is linked to congestion, dullness, breakouts or uneven skin tone.
A carefully selected peel helps increase skin cell turnover and remove some of the build-up sitting on the surface of the skin.
Not every peel causes dramatic visible peeling afterwards. There are different strengths and formulations, and the aim is to choose the right treatment for the skin rather than automatically using the strongest option.
Does home skincare matter?
A lot.
Clinic treatments can help improve the skin, but what you use every day matters just as much.
For enlarged pores and uneven texture, a simple routine usually works better than constantly changing products.
Good cleansing, hydration, daily SPF and appropriate active ingredients can all make a difference over time.
Too many harsh products can sometimes make the problem look worse by irritating or dehydrating the skin.
Do you need a course of treatments?
If you are trying to improve texture, pores or acne scarring, one treatment is unlikely to completely transform the skin.
A course allows us to work gradually and monitor how your skin responds.
For some people that might mean microneedling.
For others, chemical peels may be more appropriate.
Sometimes a treatment plan may use both at different stages.
Not sure what your skin needs?
You do not need to decide between microneedling, peels or other treatments before you arrive.
A skin consultation gives us the opportunity to look at your skin properly, discuss what is bothering you and work out the most suitable approach.

At Tempera Health & Skin Clinic in Overton, Hampshire, treatments are tailored around your skin rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol.
