Why Do Skin Tags Appear? Common Causes Explained

Skin tags are one of the most common reasons people contact me. Many clients ask the same question:

“Where do skin tags even come from?”

The simple answer is that they’re very common and usually harmless, but there isn’t one single cause.

Why do skin tags develop?

Skin tags often develop in areas where skin naturally rubs against skin or clothing. This repeated friction is thought to play a role, which is why they commonly appear on the:

  • Neck

  • Underarms

  • Eyelids

  • Under the breasts

  • Groin

Not everyone gets them, but some people seem more prone to developing them than others.

Who is more likely to get skin tags?

Skin tags become more common as we get older. They can also run in families, so genetics may play a part.

They are also seen more frequently in people who are overweight or have insulin resistance, although plenty of healthy people develop them too.

Are skin tags dangerous?

In most cases, no.

Skin tags are benign (non-cancerous) growths and don’t usually cause any health problems.

However, they can become irritated if they catch on clothing, jewellery or during shaving. That’s often the point when people decide they’d like them removed.

Don’t assume every lump is a skin tag

Although skin tags are common, not every small growth on the skin is a skin tag.

If something is new, changing, bleeding, painful or you’re simply unsure what it is, it’s important to have it assessed before considering removal.

At Tempera Health & Skin Clinic, every appointment starts with an assessment to make sure cryotherapy is appropriate. If I’m not confident it’s a skin tag, I’ll advise you on the next steps instead.

Thinking about skin tag removal?

If a skin tag is catching, uncomfortable or simply bothering you, cryotherapy can be an effective treatment option.

Appointments are available at my Overton clinic and by home visit across the Basingstoke area.
