Why Does My Ear Crackle When I Chew?

If you've noticed a crackling, popping or rustling noise in your ear when you chew, yawn or move your jaw, you're not alone.

It's actually a very common reason people contact me for an ear assessment.

The good news is that it doesn't automatically mean there's anything serious going on.

What causes crackling in the ear?

There are several possible causes of a crackling sound in the ear.

These include:

  • Ear wax build-up

  • Changes in pressure within the ear

  • Eustachian tube dysfunction

  • Jaw joint (TMJ) issues

  • Recent colds or sinus congestion

One of the most common causes I see in clinic is ear wax.

Can ear wax cause crackling sounds?

Yes.

When wax builds up inside the ear canal it can affect how sound travels through the ear.

Some people describe:

  • Crackling when chewing

  • Popping sounds

  • A feeling of movement inside the ear

  • Muffled hearing

  • Feeling like the ear is blocked or underwater

The sensation may become more noticeable when moving your jaw because the ear canal naturally changes shape slightly as you chew and talk.

How do I know if it's ear wax?

Everyone experiences ear wax differently.

Some people have completely blocked hearing.

Others only notice:

  • Crackling sounds

  • Itching

  • A feeling of fullness

  • Hearing that seems slightly duller than normal

The only way to know for certain is to look inside the ear.

Sometimes people are convinced they have wax and there is very little present. Other times the ear canal is completely blocked without them realising.

What should I do?

If the crackling started after a cold or sinus infection, it may settle on its own over time.

If you're also experiencing blocked hearing, fullness, popping or muffled sounds, an ear assessment may be worthwhile.

I always assess the ear canal before recommending any treatment. If wax is present and suitable for removal, microsuction is often the safest and most comfortable option.
